my car has just been sitting on my drive since i lost my licience the battery has been dead for a 4 weeks and i could use the fob on the key to lock the doors, today i have charged if for 7 hours, but the engine still will not run, although the doors will now lock with the fob and radio works - do you think a need to charge for some more hours to get the it running or do you think it would be a waste of time and it wont work? thanks in advance

Assuming the car was in good running condition, it should start right up after four weeks. The battery should not have died. If it is a particularly old battery you probably need a new one.
In order to start you engine you need a fully charged strong battery. To operate your door locks and radio requires very little energy. Do not just change the battery. Have the electrical system checked to make sure your alternator is working properly to recharge the battery while you drive and that there is no short that is draining the battery while the car sits.

You can charge at medium 10 amps for 2 or 3 hours even on a completely discharged battery..
What type of charger are you using?
if you charge it at 10 amps for 3 hours and it still wont start the car go pick up a new battery....
you should at least be hearing a click when you turn the key? like another user asked are the headlights bright? if the headlights are bright you may have other issues....

It depends, What is your car doing when you try to start it? What do your headlights look like when on?
-after it made the small noise, did the headlights go out? if so, my guess is the terminals need cleaned, if not, maybe the solenoid is stuck, if so try to "bump" the starter by turning your key to start it a couple of times in a row. If that doesn't work i'm at a loss, maybe then I'd look at the starter?

Just hook up, that is all I do, the output from a mains charger should not be enough to give an alternator any problem. Remember the alternator will have the battery voltage applied to it normally. OH make sure that you connect the right way red to positive and black to negative.

You need to use a low amp charger(2 AMPS) for up to 24 hours. what has happened is the battery has discharged and the plates have become coated with sulfer. a low amp charger will break up this coating and bring back the battery. if it still won't start the car after a trickle charge, the battery is trashed.
