What I mean is each presenter plays the same set of songs in virtually the same order even when is requests....drives me barmy when they've got the radio on at work all day.

Can anyone reccommend a station (UK) that I could listen to as an alternative? (I dislike pop music, prefer rock, indie Emocore, punk and the pre 90's music)

If I hear that 'Umbrella' song one more time...there are so many other good songs that never get airtime. I wish they would do a better mix of the different genres, old/new.

This is one of the "punishments" you get for listening to the radio for a long time. In many cases and entire station's audience can turn over in 12 minutes. In other words they can constantly have 100-thousand listeners but 12 minutes from now it will be an entirely different 100-thousand people...except for a few like yourself. To placate this quick turnover stations play popular tunes in "heavy" rotation...2, sometimes 3 times in an hour in some cases. They really appreciate you listening for a long time but unfortunately that's the price you will pay!

Today, most radio stations are automated. They play a loop of songs over and over. The same song will repeat, usually ever 4 hours. Also notice the jock will not tell the time. This is an automated station playing to more than one market.

Most radio stations play top-charting songs multiple times throughout the day to establish familiarity and to make sure everybody hears the songs. How frequently depends on the market size and the type of station. Once the song stops charting, the song is played less frequently

I can't remember hearing Highway Star myself. One would think that all the songs the Grateful Dead have done, why are the only 3 f*n songs you EVER hear are Truckin, Casey Jones and Touch of Grey. UGH!! I rarely listen to the radio anymore. I play my cd's when driving around or at home. Radio has become so damn boring.

They do this b/c most people listen only about 15 mins at a time and play the same stuff over and over so everyone can hear it. Mostly only pop stations do this rock stations tend to play more songs than the top 10 over and over.

Because the record companies pay the radio stations to play certain songs at certain times of the day to promote their artists.
