I love baseball, but baseball writers always sound like the kid in your class who got pounded on daily.

While I don't specifically know what brought on this question, I think that most baseball writers are huge fans of the game who weren't good players. We have a few good ones in the Boston Area (Sean McAdam, Gordon Edes) so I don't typically think of them as dweebs but I realize around the country many of the writers come off that way.

Watch the games, read the boxscores, then form your own opinions...

I agree with Chipmaker - With very few exceptions (Peter Gammons, Ken Rosenthal, some of the guys at BP and THT), most writers sound like the dweebs you describe.

That's why I'm always telling people on here and elsewhere to believe in their own opinions, because they're every bit as valid as something a "professional" might write.

If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it's probably a duck.

As well, most of them have to sell or spin some storyline, almost every day. The environment isn't conducive to great and insightful writing; they have to put up with editors who aren't much better; the nature of mass media means that coverage gets watered down to the comprehension of the unwashed millions; and some probably really believe their drivel.

Read baseball coverage for entertainment, not knowledge (beyond the factual like "Clemens suspended", if one is a roto geek who drinks this stuff).

A lot of them are. And they use the microphone as a weapon to get back at the jocks because they were nerds, dweebs, and dorks as kids.

Yes. They are old women gossiping and being judgmental. Like all groups with power they go slightly mad and make irrational decisions. They really consider themselves to be the high priests of the game. But they're just a bunch of uptight old women.

Because baseball is a cerebral game.
