Congress proposed raising the gas tax to help raise money to rebuild or repair bridges in America. Wow... that is so shocking... dems knee jerk reaction to everything... raise taxes! President Bush nixed the proposal and asked that they actually do a little homework and look how the billions of dollars that go to our roads and highways are being spent before just throwing more money at the problem. Isn't that what Congress should be doing before hiking up costs on the American people?

How about we take 100 billion from useless social programs and fix the roads.... or maybe... we just responsibly spend the 200+ billion in the budget for transportation already there.

The dems answer to everything is to throw more money at things. And, to do that, they always want to raise taxes. Sadly, they never think about spending existing revenues more effectively.

To paraphrase James Carville, it's the SPENDING, stupid.

Bush is 110% RIGHT... they do need to take a good look at how the money is being spent. I live in Kansas City, Kansas and our neighbors to the east, Kansas City, Missouri have major issues with their roads and bridges and have raised taxes to repair them, and proposed all these different plans, Well i'm 30 and I can tell you this, Until this last year their streets, bridges and highways hardly got touched, They may do a little patch job here or there, but no real work has been done.... BUT they are the nations leader in Fountains, They are 2nd to Rome when it comes to their lovely water fountains, So they have used money to ensure the city has art BUT screw the roads... And the Mayor of the city (a Democrat ) decided one year to take his entire family on a trip to Disneyworld... GUESS who paid for their trip, NOT him the tax payers of K.C. Mo. So before they go raising prices on the entire Nation to fund the bridges and street projects, they need to look into where all the money goes that is already set aside for them to use.... Kansas does pretty good on sticking to their budget we have road construction all the time and our streets are in pretty good shape, but like I said just east of us. HA they might as well have dirt roads, they would be less bumpy!!!

If the government as a whole released what it spends our money on, I think we would all be shocked. They need to do a top down review on their spending programs and get rid of the unimportant and useless projects. I believe the government actually gets enough in tax revenue to run, but it keeps trying to play big brother and dipping into every little problem they see. Of course after they fix the problem, ie throw money at it, they never leave it alone and they are forever responsible for that area. They did it with the roads, education, banking, housing, etc.

Agreed. The Governor of the state of Minnesota vetoed the proposed gas tax increase during this years legislative session. There is nothing that says had it passed any of that money would have went to bridges anyway. They would have had to admit that there was an immediate need first which as of yet has not been admitted. The thing I find quite sad was it was more of a pissing match at times - i.e. the attitude that if the governor doesn't like what we are proposing he will have to find enough support to veto it rather than taking the time to put an alternative plan on the table that he may have found more palatable. Minnesota has not raised its gas tax in over 10 years. Yes it may be time but some compromise could get politicians a long way sometimes.

the fee of gas is effected in maximum cases by using the fee of crude oil on the industry. Neither the Democratic Congress, nor President Bush somewhat has all that lots administration over the fee of gas.

Yeah, I don't understand it. After all this time of gas prices being at record highs, then it finally starts coming down to under $3.00 a gallon. Now they want to raise it up again? Well, if a Democrat is elected president, then we had better get used to this kinda stuff for at least the next 4 years.

Just take $100 billion off the next Iraq war spending bill, that should cover all of bridges that need work. About time we spend some of that tax money here in the US instead of sending where it is not wanted or appreciated. Bush wouldn't like that plan either because how could he give out that $100 billion in no bid contracts to his buddies then?

Raising the price of gas is as liberal as the pope is catholic. To them, it will help stop global warming, and teach us evil rich and middle class consumers a lesson.

Amen to that brother!! Congress needs more ways to give rewards to their districts for electing them. The Big Dig in Boston, wow, huge ripoff for the American taxpayer. Between the Kennedy submarine commander and in the good old days of Tip Oneill we can't afford Bosssston anymore.

The community guidelines prevent me from telling you what I think about you and your question.

Your petrol prices should be way higher than they are, that might just get people to use energy more wisely, and stop them driving these ridiculous cars.

Besides, if your country spent less on wars and more on infrastructure there wopuld not be a problem in the first place.
