I don't think of it as patriotic, no. But I also don't think anyone has any business criticizing the young men for not joining the military. It's their choice, just as it is the choice of every other man or woman. Who their father is is of no consequence.

Frankly, it is silly to argue this.
If his kids are working for a campaign they believe will benefit all Americans while some kid joins the service for college money, who is more patriotic?
I find it odd when people argue about the patriotism of servicepeople one way or another if they have never served.
I served 7 years and knew some guys who were (a) great loyal patriots and some others (b) who did nothing but wait around to get out and collect on the GI Bill.
By and large, the military is manned by people who fit category (a) by a ratio much greater than is found among the general population, but there are many ways for a civilian to serve the country.
Patriotism is a quality of a person, not of a uniform.

Well, if the only measure of patriotism was to join the military, then the vast majority of Americans, including the current Democrat luminaries like Hillary, Obama, Edwards and Howard Dean, would necessarily be unpatriotic.
But as an ex-military, I don't believe that military service is the only expression of patriotism. It is ridiculous to espouse such a belief because it has no logical or substantive basis.

It's an asinine line of thought to believe that the only people who are patriotic are those in the military. There are plenty of ways to serve your country besides the armed forces.
I'm not condoning what he said or in any way trying to diminish the great work our men and women are doing at a very tough job, but come on... are you really arguing that there is NO domestic work that is as patriotic as military service?

He was just spinning an answer that sounded good. No politician is going to say, "My sons aren't in the military because they don't want to risk being killed", which is, more likely than not, the reason MOST people don't go into the military.
If he had said that, his sons would have come off as less patriotic. Even though that's crazy, to associate "most patriotic" with those in the military.
