that the UK is supposed to be an ally of the USA yet the USA government treats the UK government and its people with something short of contempt?

I'm an American, and I consider the UK to be our closest ally.
If there is something we can do better, I'd be open to suggestions.

Because they can. Prime ministers for years have wanted to play at being in command of a superpower instead of accepting that post-imperial Britain is a small but potentially great little country, and the best way of achieving that illusion is to go about with their head stuck firmly up the ar$e of the American president, thus enabling said president to treat us however they like, with impunity!

They don't - they are just working there way through history as we in the UK did, we were as 'contemptuous' of our allies in our Imperialistic days.
Give them time they are about to enter a state of (I feel) change. If push came to shove I know which Union I would rather have at my back.
