Don't shampoo that often! (Read on)
TRUST ME! I was doing it myself once a month.
I had major detergent build up that when I used my Bissel Spot Bot and my Bissel Pro Heat, I began to get brown spots, and I mean huge ones appearing.
I had a professional come in and they said that it was a build up of soap. The detergent was a magnet to dirt and stains.

I now use white vinegar and water. 1/2 and 1/2. Instead of detergent.
Yeah, it smelled for a bit, until it dries completely.
The whole key is, to rinse well, suck up all excess water well, and to let it dry before walking on it.
I have been cleaning my carpets at least once a month for 13yrs, and the carpets are still in excellent shape.

vacuuming (sp?) everyday is fine (We have 2 dogs and it seems like I could vacuum twice a day & there'd still be hair...

I'd suggest you purchases a Bissell quick steamer - they're about $100. We have one. You just fill the little tank on the back with hot water (I don't use detergent) and "spot" clean where & when you need to. Trust me, it's great for kids mess ups too. Not complicated at all to use. It's paid for itself and thensome in my house (vomit, urine, you name it). But it's nothing I'd use on a weekly basis for a hight traffic area if I could help it. I'd put area rugs down in those areas where dogs come in and out.

About shampooing carpet -- I think if you do this too frequently you can loosen the actuall backingof the carpet. It's recommended that you have your carpets professionally steam cleaned once a year for obvious reasons and to prolong the life of your carpet.

if you are vacuuming every day you shouldn't need to clean your carpet more then every 6 months or so, at the most. Most likely you could do it as little as once a year. Obviously you want to clean up any pet stains or spills right away.

I think every 3-6 months would be good. You don't want to cause mold and rot to your carpet by shampooing it to often. Good Luck! :)

Does it get that dirty? Frequent shampooing will kill it.
