I am driving 2001 C class C200K, in Malaysian models, there is no direct button to open and close the gas tank over.
The remote is the key, when you press the release button on your remote it open all doors/cover which include the gas tank cover. When you press the lock button on your remote, it locks everything.
After pressing the release button on your remote control, manually press the right side of the gas tank cover (when you are facing it), after you have done your refilling, you will have to press the release button of your remote again, by doing that, you will see, the gas tank cover pop back to close position.
Just to be sure, the remote is the key itself, you will see no 'key blade' in the W210 or later Kompresser model. The remote is self charged every time you drive. The lock button is at the top, release button at the bottom left and the trunk release button is on the bottom right.

I believe the previous answer is correct. There is no pushbutton inside the vehicle, like most Japanese cars. I have a 97 C230 and a 94 C220 and you simply push in on the gas filler door on the right (front) edge when the vehicle is unlocked, and the door opens far enough to pull it open from the left (rear) edge. Unscrew (counter-clockwise) the gas cap and you are all set.

They meant look in the glove box and read the owners manual. Or you could ask the person that drove the car before.
