san_mateo_guy - at least 2 democratic candidates support gay marriage

I'm not surprised that the republican candidates did not accept a similar invite. It is an issue that doesn't resonate with their electoral base.

To Mr. Jello -- either you weren't paying attention at the time, or you just have conveniently forgotten. Don't ask, don't tell was a COMPROMISE by the Clinton administration. The Republican Congress and the military in general wanted something MUCH more hurtful to the gay community that this policy. As Hillary so eloquently put last night, she also agrees that it is a flawed rule for the times, and she wants to repeal that. And DOMA is a similar issue. Right now without DOMA, I believe, the US will have a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriages. DOMA was necessary at the time. And now it needs to be repealed as well.

Candidates can say anything before they get elected. It's what they do once there in office.

We shouldn't forget that Hillary and Bill declared themselves co-presidents before they signed "Don't ask" into law. For this, more gay men and women were kicked out of the service during their 8 years in office than the 12 years of Regan/Bush before them.

Also they signed the 'DOMA" into law, giving the states the right to deny gays their rights of marriage even when they are legally wedded in other states.

So what gains besides lip service have gays gotten from Democrats?

Republicans do have a couple of good ideas that will give gays an advantage.

First is the privatization of Social Security. Privatizing SSI would let gays leave their SSI money to their partner, friend, or charity of their choice.

Second is the fair or flat tax that would eliminate tax breaks for having kids and being married. Gays would no longer have to subsidize other peoples children.

Not all gays are liberals, don't forget the log cabin republicans.

Neo-cons/Conservatives are not republicans, a true republican is a constitutionalists, Ron Paul for example, is a true republican, imho. From what I have heard the "republican" candidates say, he is the only true one. Democrats are all spineless wimps who won't stand up to the neo-cons. Things are getting messy in both parties. I am an Independent.

Right now, John McCain is the only one to openly say that the gay marriage issue should be left to the states to decide. Not one Democrat openly came out and mentioned their support for gay marriage. I don;t think we have a strong candidate in favor of us on either side.

I"m not Republican, but I wasn't surprised that NONE of them accepted the invitiation.

*EDIT*

Surprisingly, I have to agree with Mr Jello on the privitization of Social Security and Fair Tax, however the Republicans aren't even going for the Fair Tax. And even if they were, the Republican party has changed for the worse .

Republicans weren't invited to last night's forum. It was for the Democrats. However, they WERE invited to their own forum. Only one responded to the invitation...Romney....and he declined. The silence from all the others speaks volumes!
