I bought a new car battery yesterday and they said that if I returned the core, they would refund me $10. What is the battery core? is this the old battery? Is it something off the new battery? Where is it? How do I get it off?

The core is the old battery. Around here, if you take batteries to the scrap yard, they will give you $1.50 for each of them. $10.00 is a good core return value. Take it back and get your money back.

The term "core charge" and "disposal fee" are one and the same. You pay a fee when you buy a new battery and get that fee back or don't pay it at all if you bring in an old one. I've never heard of them charging you either way, though. Are you sure you heard correctly? As the prior poster stated, they have to be disposed of properly, and this fee is to encourage you to bring in the old one so it doesn't just get chucked in a dumpster. The term "core charge" is used but isn't accurate. No, the batteries are no longer rebuilt, but that is the term that most people associate with when you're charged a fee when you buy a new part, and get the money back when you bring the old one back to the store. It's just for simplicity's sake. I hope this cleared this up for you.

Yes, it is the old battery. It will be recycled. The core charge will make you return the old one. Without that, people would just throw them off on the side of the road or litter at another place. Take it back and get your money back.

A core charge is somthing that they put on to encourage you to bring the old part back because they rebuild them. If it was just your battery you changed out then yes it is the old battery.
