Settling in a foundation can be caused by time or it could be a sign of larger problems... anything from rotting timbers to water from rains or leaking plumbing. If the crack has come back, I would check for problems first. Check the foundation walls for rot/damage and that the ground is sloped so that rain water flows away from the house. While down there, see if you notice any damp spots around drain and water lines. If all that checks out okay, then it's probably natural settling and another application of crack filler should do the job.

Debbie has it right, the foundation of the wall is probably sinking. Is this on the second floor or the first floor? Is it over a basement or an outside load bearing wall?

If it is over a basement area, you jusr need to add a Lolly column, or ratchet up an existing one. You can only twist these up a 1/4 inch at a time or all your molding will pop off.

If it is over an outside wall or a slab, that is a bigger problem that will require a foundation specialist.

Good Luck

All houses will "settle" some. Some are worse than others.
To reduce the chance of a crack comming back, it helps a lot to tape the crack (Drywall Tape) before making a repair.

you could have a structural defect like a foundation issue but more than likely its not that.you probably have a 2 x 4 stud behind the wall that has twisted.your better off repatching rather than taking down a wall to secrure the 2 x 4 better
