Articles of Confederation lasted for ten years and was created before the Constitution.
The Articles favored states rights over the national government's rights.
For example, the National Government wasn't allowed to tax. The government had to ask the states to borrow money. Also, under the articles of Confederation, each state had a different standard for money.
The Articles of Confederation didn't work because of the lack of power in the National Government. When the Constitution was created, they gave the national government power over certain aspects, and the states over others, and then local government over others with a system of checks and balances.
The writers were afraid of having a too-powerful national government, or one person as a leader.
