Hi this question is either for Smokers or ex-smokers. I don't smoke, and I don't plan to, butu I'm just curious to know weather it was only peer pressure that make you do it. Or was it something else that made you want to smoke, and smoke.

And ex-smokers....what made you want to stop? And how hard was it and how did you do it?

I would like to know these things if any of my friends or family start...thank you so much!

When I was a teenager, it was cool to smoke. Everyone did. When I got pregnant--about 4 years ago, I quit cold turkey. No questions asked and not a doubt in my mind that I would succeed.

Peer pressure at first.
Then, a need to smoke second.
Then, my life revolved around smoking...like an alcoholic I planned only those things where I could smoke. Or, made sure I had a plan to beable to smoke once I went somewhere.
First thing when I woke up in the morning I smoked a cig!
I realized I was addicted...............couldn't stop smoking.

July 9th 2007 I ended up back in the hospital with pnuemonia. My daughter talked me into trying the new pill on the market called CHANTIX. IT WORKED>

I quit a 43 year addiction.........a bit too late but it really is never too late to quit. It is unbelievable now that I look back on those years of hacking my lungs out.

P>S> I ended up with a terminal lung disease and still couldn't quit with gum, patches, you name it I tried it.
I am only 59 but feel like I am 82 years old. I am disabled because of my stupidity and some other illnesses I have.

well, there wasnt any peer pressure to do it. I just started when I stole one from my mom when I was 15. I smoked for 8 years, and the quit cold turkey at the age of 23. I quit because I just wanted to. There is no good that could come from it, and so much bad that no doubt will come from it. Never start, and you never have to deal with having to quit. Its hard. It really is.

peer pressure?-yes and no
I started @ 27. I was dating a chain smoker, and I didn't smoke@ the time. when we split, I found myself in a bar buying a pack and haven't stopped. I've tried to stop, Prescriptions, The Patch, cold turkey, nothing works. Each time I quit, I end up smoking MORE!
Don't start. It's an evil weed.!( :{Q)

Ex smoker - smoked for 12 years...horrible habit.

I made the decision after I was walking up the stairs and couldn't breath. Years of pressure from others to quit didn't work for me. I had to do it on my own.

My mom smoked for years and I am sure I got caught up in seeing what all the fuss was about.

Glad to hear that you don't smoke and don't plan to.

Edit- I did it cold turkey BTW

I'm a smoker. I first tried it because I was curious what the big deal was, a bunch of people in my family smoke/smoked. I got into it because, yeah, "all my friends were doing it." I know it's unhealthy, but I don't think it makes me a bad person.

i guess it was kinda peer pressure. everyone thought it was "cool" i have smoked since i was 11 and now im 23. i just recently started thinking about quitting and gave it a go on monday. i bought patchs and everything.

i lasted a whole 6 hours.

i so didnt think it would be that hard. but im going to work myself up to it again. i will do it eventually i hope.

When I was 16, I started smoking because I was serverly depressed. Now I'm almost 30 and I still smoke, I'm still severly depressed, and I just enjoy it. Besides alcohol, cigarettes are the only thing that puts me at ease. I tried quitting on numerous occasions, but I just can't.

I started smoking as a teenager and it was peer pressure and I have tried to quit with no success as of yet.
It is very difficult for some people (me) but I have known people to just lay them down and quit cold turkey

It was just something to do,not nessisarily peer pressure.Plus,it seemed like everyone I knew smoked.I'm 40 now,and am starting see the damage it does. Not only to your lungs, but everything in my house is starting to turn yellow from nicotine stains. That and it really burns a hole in your pocket! So my plan is to stop by the end of the year.

In the end, it basically was peer pressure. I definitely wouldn't have went through the choking and coughing fits if I were by myself, but my friends were watching, and we all know how that goes.

I still smoke, but I wish I had never started. Take it from someone who has learned their mistake and please don't start. It is one h3ll of a mistake, trust me.
