Firstly, because it's a waste of time and water - established grass will recover from periods of drought without watering (it might look a bit brown, but it will recover). If you have a new lawn it would need some help though.

Secondly, unless you really really soak the lawn it encourages the roots to come to the surface to the water, which in the long run will be counterproductive, because in dry periods, the water is found deeper in the ground and if all the roots are just under the surface the grass can't get to it.

You really don't need to water an established lawn, but if you do, do it in the evening so the sun doesn't scorch the grass through the water droplets and it doesn't just evaporate.

Watering a lawn in the summer should only be done in the EARLY MORNING - between 5:30 & 8:30 AM. A lawn should receive 1" of water/week. Set out several tuna cans in your lawn, tun on the sprinklers & when the tuna can is full stop watering. You will be done for the week.

As another poster said, watering for short periods of time will result in the grass developing a shallow root system leaving it susceptible to disease and invasion of weeds.

Watering at night is a big no-no. Having wet grass at night leaves it susceptible to a wide variety of fungal diseases.

Watering in the middle of the day will not scorch the grass, but will waste many, many gallons of water as more of it will evaporate than will get to the plant's roots where you really want it to be.,

Watering during the heat of the day only wastes water. The heat evaporates the water. The best time to water during hot weather is very early in the morning (between 6-9 am). Watering at night can promote fungus.

It creates a steam situation. When there is water on the grass in the middle of a hot day, the water does not cool the grass as many people believe but rather the droplets of water magnify the sun's rays that can 'blister' the grass. ' It's kinda like a 'water magnifying glass.' Because of this, It is advised that you water early in the morning or later in the evening.

1. The water droplets intensifies the heat on the grass
2. Watering the grass during hot weather boils the roots and
will kill the grass, turning it from green to light brown in
colour. Best time to water is in the early morning hours.

The roots of the grass will remain in the top inch of the soil rather than go down into deeper soil. That means when there is a dry spell you will have to constantly waste water on your lawn.
It is best to allow the roots to go down deep to find ground water.

Because the ground will not have a good chance of soaking in but will evaporate and so water the lawn in the evening.

The water evaporates when the temperature is hot, and it is just wasted. Better to water early in the morning, or, if you can, around 2am. Btw, if you let your lawn grow just a little longer, it will provide shade for itself and require less water.

its bad to water any plants when the weather is hot as it can burn the leaves as the water will magnify the sun. It is best to water plants on hot days at dusk. This also means the water will be used by the plants and not just eveporate off

Because the water droplets heat up very quick and burn the grass, as well as the same effect as the magnifying glass has ants when you focus the sun through it
