It was a back fire. When you are almost empty, the fuel leans out and there was too much air for the amount of fuel in the cylinder. This caused the fuel to auto ignite and burn or explode before it was supposed to. That's why the bang. It doesn't do the engine any good, but it sounds like it didn't hurt it either. good luck

Like most machines sometimes there is a backfire. Happens often on some but I'm pretty sure it was a backfire.

Actually it would be called a lean misfire. This is when the fuel mixture leans out.....
