There are many spyware and adware programs available. I always liked SpyBot and AdWare. Check you internet provider. they usually have free software to use like McAfee which I think is great. Also, HiJack This is a good program to clean the registry in the system. If you use that, at the end of the scan you will get text shown, just copy it and paste it at hijackthis.de and it will tell you what is bad and you should delete. For the error, try googling what it says and see if there is a workaround. If you use Internet Explorer, see if there is an update. Firefox usually checks itself. Make sure all the updates are installed on the machine. (Windows Update) If nothing works and the error still occurs then try a different browser. I recommend Firefox and Netscape. You can also try AOL Helix (formerly Open Ride). It has mail, aim, video, and internet in one browser.

Definately invest in Norton anti-virus protection (its got a nerdy dude holding a laptop on the front of the box). It's usually about £40 but PC world are doing it for half price. Definately worth the investment for a healthy PC! Go ahead and get it its cheaper in the long run! xxx
*edit*
sorry I was being a dumbass didn't see the bit about it being a work comp and free software... sowie x

You need some Firewall Software and Anti-Spyware Software. Also, you would definitely need some software to protect your identity and information that you keep online.
Go to http://www.nothingbutsoftware.com and look at the Tools and Utilities section. In the Tools and Utilities section. select Computer Security. You will see some awesome Computer Security software.

What EXACTLY is the error report? You could be looking at something entirely different than a virus or spyware, it's hard to tell without the exact error.

Hmmmm, seems everyone has alot for you to check out already so I'll leave it at that...But, with the pc being a work one, wouldn't it be your jobs problem to have all of the firewalls and virus scanners that your comp needs...Not yours???? Just a thought that's all.
Goodluck on the info the others have left for you to check out though...Although I am using a totally different one to what everyones got...Maybe you'll find one from their lists though.
Cheers
