I had started a new job and I really liked it! I was wandering round the shop and I saw a shifty-looking kid! I had to pounce!
So I rugby-tackled him down and banged his head off the floor yelling "Give me the good, give me the goods!!" His mum started crying and screaming. The boss came out and rang the police. Eventually, a policeman managed to calm me down.
He hadn't stolen anything, but I did the right thing! Didn't I?

In short -NO-
* You are not store detective/security officer
* You do not know the reason he was 'looking' shift (could have been epileptic, diabetic, needing medication etc)
* You have no qualification or proficiency in corporate or public security (I assume as you are asking this question in the first place). Moreover, your employer may be sued and if their insurance may not cover any litigation
* Did you confront them about anything they may or may not have had? Or did you stop them leaving the store WITHOUT making physical contact?
* Was he a minor (under 17yrs old), if so there are further protections under tort & common law
* You did not know the legal implications of what would have happened had you injured him (for all you know, he could have just recovered from surgery)
* There is no indication you advised the security staff or line manager
* You were not supremely confident that he had stolen anything
* You would have to be (again) supremely confident that any items that he may have taken were not placed back on a shelf before you pounced.
In short, don't be surprised if you get a call from a lawyer pressing charges for common assault. Also, surprised if you dont get a formal incident on your work record.
Hope not though.

NO! Not only would you lose your job if I was the manager or owner, but if I was the mom, you'd be arrested for assault. You committed a crime.
Also, you can't judge people by their looks. If that was okay, we'd still have slaves, all people from the Middle East would be in prison, and you wouldn't be able to change your look without worrying about being tackled by some silly clerk.

I'm thinking unless you're play rugby, you may want to leave the rugby tackling out of the shop.

It depends, You didn't actually see him steal anything did you?
So yes you did what most of us would do but in the politically correct world we live in now, you were probably wrong to assume he was stealing.
You should never assume, Why?
Because its makes an A S S out of U and ME

i think i would have just chased him down and had no physical contact. tackling him just makes it sound like you were trying to beat him up. dont ever try to talkle someone at your job, no matter the situation. i guess.
