Id stick with what you got now.. add more memory and maybe get an 8800 GTS 320Mb. But your AMD x2 6000 is allright for the next 18 months in gaming.
Most new games are only just making use of dual core, so quad core will be at least 2 years away. I would have a minimum of 2Gb memory. I wouldnt bother with the 8600GT's not even as powerful as you 7950. They are not good cards at all. All they got in DX10, which they will not be able to handle.

That would definitely give you a faster computer. SLI (dual graphics cards) are really effective only in resolutions greater than 1600 x 1200 like you'd want for a 24 inch monitor. Get a single 8800 if you are running lower. What operating system are you running? I still think Vista is not mature. I would advise you waiting till SRP1 or better is released before upgrading. Then you will want to upgrade at least your video card to take advantage of DirectX 10. Even the machine you are now running would benefit just from the video card upgrade. As far as the RAM is concerned, if you are using a 32 bit operating system, it really won't utilize more than 2 Gb. Check out September's issue of Maximum PC's and the newest Dream Machine. They only put in 2 Gb and that was in a $11,000 computer! Windows isn't 64 bit ready yet in some people's opinion. You have a very good machine. I'd advise waiting till DirectX 10 matures and games are available that run with it. Then decide about upgrading. Have fun.

Change It For An Intel Q6600 And 2x Nvidia 8600GTS.
WOuld Be Very Good. Altough I Think That Quad Cores And SLI Graphic Cards Is A Bit O.T.T At The Moment.
But Hell, If You Got The Money, Why not !?

simply add more RAM to your current setup add at least 512mb 1.5gb recommended
cause the move from that system to the other won't be that worth it as quad core has too much processing power to be useful as although some games already use it just adjust the amount of threads the graphics card will bottle neck it as 2x 8600 gt isn't as fast as a single 8800 gts 320mb(although the 640mb version is required to run new games with full textures) and has less frame buffer only 256mb.

although quad core is great, if its gaming.you should look at the core2duo6700 and pair it with a nvidia 8800gtx ultra. 4gb of high latency ram will help things along. don't forget to hook up a decent power supply 800watts upwards for future proofing. quads good but only supreme commander makes full use of its power in its A.I. routines

well.. Quad core is pretty hardcore. you'll have insane processing power with that setup. however, if you're using Vista, i would get anything that would work with a DirectX 10 card or a physics card to get the ultimate gaming experiences

Most games are not written to take advantage of multicore processors. The graphics card is a nice one though.

Whichever which has more RAM, that would go faster.
