is there a standard height or formula for installing the P-trap?

Your sink may have measurements for the drain lines. Mine had the center of the drain line at 19-1/2" from the floor. The trap connected perfectly when I hooked it up. Better to have the drain a little lower than too high. You can buy longer tailpieces for the connection but if the trap is "jammed" up against the bottom of the sink, it's a problem.
