A dissertation is a paper a student writes in order to get their PHD. The person chooses a topic concerning philosophy and does a great deal of research and needs to write it and have it judged by the professors in order to complete their PHD.

another word most commonly used would be thesis.
A philosophical thesis would be either the philosophers presentation of his theory on paper ,presenting research and facts leading to his conclusion of said theory.or a student of philosophy putting forth new research and facts for or against said theory.
