Turkey's government is trying to isolate church (mosque) and State.
Modernly, Turkey has been a friend to the Western nations; it is also one of the most popular tourist attractions since its people are very US-friendly.
Just because a country is predominantly Islamic, doesn't mean it is Anti-US.
Look at the embarrassingly warm reception GW got in Albania recently. They treated him like he was their monarch.

Most Americans do not have an opinion on this matter and would be perfectly content to allow Europe to handle Union matters . . . however, if I had to guess why the U.S. government would like Turkey to join the Union . . . It would probably be in trade-off for Turkey not attacking should we subdivide Iraq creating Kurdistan. This is just a guess and has not been substantiated by any other source.
