If not, then what drives us to want to have children?

(Sorry, I know I asked this question yesterday, but the response was really good and I'm keen to hear more opinions on this issue.)

Depends on who you ask.

For some, especially those who come from a culture with a long tradition of Confucian values, bearing children is a duty, i.e. the family name must be preserved for posterity.

Others have children simply because they WANT to, for the entertainment value - after all, when the babies grow up they can keep you company, play sports/video games with you, etc.

I know some people who had children for fear of growing old with no one to take care of them.

And, of course, you get to brag and be proud, when, after all your hard work, your kid grows up to BE somebody, or at least a credit to your good parenting.

It is my experience that most people are motivated to have children for all of these reasons to some degree.

It is partly egotistical because this is not only you who is concerned. You and your partner must plan it out in building a family. It is not only you who will decide but it requires sexual partnership to attain it. Every married couple has the primary purpose of creating their own family. The very purpose of getting into marriage is because of having a child or children. There will be no family to speak of when there is no child or children present. Your marriage will be useless without it. In my personal experience, my life have been complete when our first child was born last December 22, 2003. For me, it was the greatest moment in my life. Right now were still making or in the process of doing the second child. If it comes it will be the second precious gift from God.

Yes it can be part egotistical. I also think that as humans we are intrinsically need of reproduction. as with any other animal.

I felt I was born to be a mother. I was proud of my kids. They were a handful to take care of, but worth it.

It is just something built in us to reproduce
