i always thought of texas as a progressive state, because of its cowboy history. if memory serves me correctly, i read in college that white, hispanics, and blacks settled texas and lived together in harmony. but the stuff i have been reading recently online about texas is opposite. so im kind of wondering about the place and if some texans can fill me in on what the place is really like, because i have a biracial child. thank you.

Texas isn't anymore racist than any other state. All states have idiots.
As a white guy, I cringe when I see some ill educated dumb assed redneck spewing his or her racial beliefs.
Just as I have seen black guys cringe when some dumb assed black welfare momma spouts her beliefs.

Racism in Texas is sporadic. Some areas are, most aren't.
As stated, the big cities are less so than the isolated little redneck towns where people don't leave the county in which they were born.
I moved from the Houston area down to an isolated area on the coast and was shocked to see so many ignorant people. Then I found out most had never lived anywhere but here.
First week on the job and a co-worker thought it neccessary to tell me how a co-worker was a "jew-boy". He stated "I ain't never met a jew-boy before but he's alright". He stated this out in the open in front of fellow coworkers, the person who was Jewish, and management.
I damned near fell over. Thought I had fallen down the rabbit hole. No one seemed bothered by this. And no one said anything to him about it.
Later, I realized that the person who said this has lived here all his life and so had most of the others. They just have had little interaction with the real world and simply don't know any better.
The employee breakroom table had a paper towel holder that sat on the table. It was a wooden cut out of a black "mammie" with the words "Yo' Mammie don't work here, clean up after yo'self". That shocked me considering where I work is a gov't entity. I later made it "dissappear" and the guy who made the statement about a "jew-boy" has since been fired, albeit for other reasons.
I don't think any of them meant to be racist but they just don't know any better.
So, it all boils down to ignorance and worldly experience. Many simply don't have any education beyond that of their small school system where everyone passes. I have noticed most simply repeat what they have heard from the older men in their families and are not willing to question any of it. Ignorance breeds ignorance.

But even with these idiots around, there is no reason to have fear. They aren't mean and don't have in for anyone of different skin color. They are just insensitive clods who inadvertently might appear to be racists.
Do be careful of East Texas. There are some very stupid white rednecks living there. Because I am a liberal, I don't talk about my political beliefs when in East Texas. Hell, I might get drug behind a truck by some beer swilling, 8th grade dropouts.

There are some small towns, far from large cities where people will tell you that it's a big Klan town, but it's the same throughout the South. A town will have a reputation as being racist because a few rednecks got together and did something stupid. In big cities and samller towns near them you'll see lots of interracial couples and mixed race children. Texas is no more or less racist than any other state. You'll run into bigots no matter where you go, it's a matter of finding the people you want to be friends with.

Racism In Texas

I came to this site to read what people think or feel about Texas as a whole. My husband and I have never lived anywhere outside of Mississippi, we heard people talk about racism but never came head on with it.We are planning to move to the Texas area soon and what a safe and well living area for all of us. There is racism every where you go. I am more concern about where my children will attend school in Texas, what areas to go to, where will my children be shown love because that's what we teach. I have attending a all white church and they are the most loving people you ever want to meet. I am concern for my children as well as my husband and I. We are teaching our children Christian values and would like them to remain that way. We are looking for a church home in Texas that promotes true worship, love, and good God fearing skills. So the site did give me some hope and what to look for. Thanks all that posted on the racism issue.

Texas is a big state with three of the nation's largest cities and a number of other medium to large cities.

The cowboy history has less to do with the progressive nature of the state than the fact that its geography and demography have encouraged cultural diversity.

Biracial children are not uncommon, largely because of a large military population in the state. You may find some communities less receptive than others to biracial people, but this will be true anywhere in the U.S.

I don't know what you've been reading. I have lived in or near San Antonio for 31 years. I have seen some cultural friction, but no worse than other places in the United States. I have lived in four other states. Texas is as good or better than all of them.

Those states are Illinois, Colorado, New Mexico, and Michigan, by the way. Of the four New Mexico was probably the best but Texas is better.

Depending on where you go you may find some communities less accepting than others, but it isn't hard to find out which are and which are not.

Zackis2cool--you're terribly misguided. None of your information is even close to correct, and 'racisted' isn't even a word. San Antonio is in fact, not 95% white. It has a very high hispanic population, and Galveston isn't very racist. Are you like 14 or something? Seriously.

Ok, to answer the question, as in other states, parts of texas are racist, parts are not. The issue of illegal immigration is huge in texas due to it bordering Mexico. So, lately, that debate has taken center stage. If anything, I see more black on white racism here than in other states (I've lived in PA, NC, LA, MA). But, overall, I don't think it's more racist than other states.

I have lived in all four corners of Texas. Austin, Dallas and Houston and their suburbs are the major cities and the most culturally mixed. People in the in these areas in general are not racist.

I have experienced whites being very vocal and throwing the N word around in small towns in both East and West Texas. The towns I lived in there were populations of less than 2000.

I think most of it comes down to the less educated and sheltered people were raised the higher the probability that they are racist.

I have biracial nephews who reside in Dallas. They have never said anything about anyone being racist to them.

I have biracial neighbors in The Woodlands (Houston suburb) they have never said anything bad about racism in Houston.

I live in San Antonio and TRUST ME, it's like living in paradise here compared to Richmond,VA.
There's a strong Mexican culture here, but it's a good thing! The only hint of conflict is Katrina victims causing alot of problems in certain areas..and this is not an assumption either..nor racist. And illegal immigration is a touchy subject here..but overall it is a great mixture of many races.
The biggest difference here in comparison to Richmond is a HUGE difference in the attitudes of the african american residents, Texas life works well for everyone. For whatever reason, Richmond continues to be plagued with numerous types of useless tension usually created by a very small percentage of it's citizens.

Yes Texas as with other states is racists blacks and mexicans hate Whites. In the vast majority of violent crime Whites are the victim, and a minority is the offending party. Its the same with property crimes. If something is stolen vadalized etc. its almost always a minority that is responsible and the property almost alwaays belongs to Whites
