This spring, my grape vines were loaded with healthy looking grapes. I was thrilled because I thought the crop would be wonderful this fall. Well, as usaul, the grapes have started drying out. I have heard that grapes need a lot of rain, and we have certainly had that ( upstate New York). So what is causing this to happen?? And what can I do to prevent this?? Thanks!

You might consider pruning your grapes back properly next year. If your grapes weren't pruned back properly your vine might be trying to handle more than the root system can support. Get a book and learn how to prune your grapes. You also might want to give it some potassium and phosphorus based fertilizer this fall to get the roots to grow better.

I've heard from winemakers that it's hard to get bad grapes if the grape vines are pruned and taken care of properly.

There is really no good answer for this question. Grapes are a VERY fickle fruit. Only certain parts of the world consistently produce good grapes. That's why good wine is soooo expensive. I live in Michigan and have about 100 feet of table grapes and wine grapes that grow wild on my back fence. This year the weather was perfect and we have tons of grapes. Other years it's not soo good. Grapes like hot dry days and cool moist nights. There's not much you can do about the weather . . . so just try to enjoy the good years, and be patient in the bad years !!! Happy gardening !!!
