Malaysia's crime rate is lower than that of the US. And although the fashion trend of raping is on the rise, there are 6-7 rapes every day according to the official police statistics, rapists mostly target local girsls, and of local girls school girls are the most desired.
Avoid dark lonely streets at night and you should be ok. I suggest you staying in bukit Bintang area in KL. There are lots of foreign tourists there, Aussies, Europeans, Arabs, Indians, Americans, so its a nice place to stay. Plus all that you need (shopping, eating) is within walking distance.
You need to know about taxis: they will probably want to rip you off. Arrange the price first before getting into a cab. Another thing: don't criticise anything about Malaysia in front of a Malaysian. They can't take criticism. They really can't.
I don't recommend you staying at a VERY cheap hotel. Find something in budget between RM70 - 100 (that's about 20 to 30 US Dollars). Those are nice, good enough. You can get a hotel for 10 $ per night but rather don't, it's disgustingly dirty with torn bedsheets and cocroaches.
Another tip: don't trust any local man. Probably you're going to attract pervs so don't bother any sweet talks or "kind" help offers. Just ignore them and tell them to get lost. Not that all Malaysian men are pervs, no, but it's the perverts who approach girls and initiate empty talks to fulfil their perverse fantasies.
Oh yes, don't trust Bangladeshis, Indians and Indonesians also. But most of them can't speak English so they won't bother you.

Don't worry, there's enough money to spend if USD converted to RM. Things at Malaysia quite cheap, hotels and food are ok too. Don't worry.
Just be careful if you're travelling alone. Anyway, Malaysia is still a safe country to be visit. I agree that crimes that involved with foreign travellers is less. Put your money and purse well, beware of pick pockets.
Have a nice holiday~

If you can show a picture of yourself, then probably you'll find out what's the answer about the crime rate and all. No offense but I think appearance plays an important role. Majority of Malaysians are friendly to foreigners. Since you are planning to spend your time at the Golden Triangle, I doubt anything would happen because that place is so crowded daily and I guarantee no one will even bother where you are from or what you are doing unless if you are intentionally looking for trouble.

You'll be fine, it's very safe here compared to Europe and the USA. Crime is very low here.....
It's best to not go to a very cheap hotel. Pick something a bit better. But it would be a nice idea to go to a business hotel (Encassa, Quality Hotels, Impiana), they are in the best locations, cheaper and super service. Don't go to the typical tourist hotels (rennaisance, Sangri lah, etc...), they are often a long walk away from everything. TAxis are always trying to overcharge you.... Best would be Encassa hotel in the middle of China town, nice.....
Oh, and mail me if you wanna know where to go out and all that. There's many expats in Kuala Lumpur....

check with asiarooms.com and you will find something within your budget. it is quite safe just make sure that ur handbag is always in front of you. dont accept drinks or food from strangers. like wherever you are and all the necessary precautions that you take. you should be fine if you dont be overly friendly to strangers. find something in bukit bintang if u can afford it. tune hotel is alright plus there is a train station close by, good luck and have fun.

To be honest, Malaysia is the most safe country to be visited by foreigner because the crime rate that involves foreigner is very very low .. it happens almost not every year .. so when there are one or two cases involving a foreigner, the news had overbroadcast the issue because it was a rare case. Malaysian normally respect foreigner especially European and Asian tourist very much because it make them proud.
Should you need further assistant when you are in malaysia .. feel free to email (langkaugaris@yahoo.com) or YM me. I will be in Kuala Lumpur or Selangor

I don't live in Malaysia, but it's almost a rule to avoid traveling overseas alone, regardless of which country you're talking about. Nothing wrong with Malaysia, it's just not the best idea to travel to another country alone.

Tune hotel is budget hotel in KL, (cost you very cheap compare to others hotel). --> www.tunehotel.com
Is good also you familiar with KL place, this web map is useful for you to plan your trip: http://www.streetdirectory.com/malaysia/kl/travel.php?grande=1&travel_id=&travel_site=190
If you know someone in Malaysia or KL, is good to guide you around...
Others Tips:
Have your mobile phone roam with Malaysia Network.. if you feel roaming charge is expensive, consider to get a Malaysia mobile number (with free incoming call), just need to divert your US number to Malaysia mobile number.

If you don't have much money and alone, it is BEST you reconsider your need to visit Malaysia... Those are the two foremost dangers of living in Malaysia even for Malaysians themselves.
Hope this helps. I don't think there is a need for me to elaborate more over here... Its more like a common sense issue.
