I was stationed in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba at the time...I was going home for good! I hadn't talked to my parents for about a month, and I had no intention of letting them know I was coming home. I wanted it to be a surprise. Well, the day before I flew out, I get a call from my mom (which is rare, I usually call my folks, not the other way around) telling me my younger brother died. I was devastated. He was 10 months younger, so as you can imagine we did everything together growing up. At his funeral I was crying horribly and when I passed his coffin for the last time before he descended into the earth, I almost passed out. I fell to one knee and thought I was going to lose it. So yeah, I think that is the saddest thing that has happened to me.

Losing my dad when I was just seventeen. My Dad was an alcoholic and I had in my own way given up on him, I didn't realise he was so ill, and he never told me.
He died not knowing how much I truly loved him, instead he died wondering why I didn't visit him as much and didn't know it was because it hurt so much to watch him lose himself to drink.
He'll never know how much I love and miss him, he was the the most important person in my life and Im forever grateful for the short time that I had such a wonderful Dad.

I have had a lot of death in my family.... but the saddest thing ever was seeing and holding my baby nephew for the first time in a funeral home. He was 3 months old and passed away of SIDS.
