Hi. i'm jamal, a villager in india. my village is located near the jungles where wild tigers live too. Generally, those tigers do not drift into human habitat, but once in a while a face to face meeting between unarmed human and full grown tiger occurs. The result of such meetings is mostly fatal for the villagers. Yesterday a wild tiger killed a 30 year old man who seemed to be lost and was searching for the way to village. My question is why did the tiger kill the man if he didn't want to eat him? i thought they kill only for food. And also how can such future tragedies be averted? advise would be appreciated.

Tigers kill to defend themselves their young and their territory. If they feel threatened or are simply not hungry at that moment, they will not eat the prey.
Well fed tigers are picky about what they eat and will stick to a consistent diet of their favorite animals. Few are likely to be used to eating humans.
Humans smell bad and smother themselves with perfumes, deodorants and soaps that offend sensitive animals.

If you are being hunted there is little you can do. That is rare steer clear and do not be threatening. Move laterally sideways neither towards or away from the tiger and pick up large objects or limbs to feed him if he comes at you. If you can get him to bite a tree limb, go for the eyes. A tiger will to anything to protect his vision and will retreat if his eyes are damaged or hurt.

Tigers are very ferocious and definitely not an animal you can trust not to attack you when you are in proximity - even after years in captivity. A tiger will attack and kill you nine times out of ten if it gets an opportunity - that's the nature of the big cat. The reason tiger didn't eat the man was either that the tiger's stomach was full or that the tiger didn't consider the man as part of his menu.

Usually because man goes into their territory (home ground). When someone, a stranger comes into our house or near our children we defend them by being aggressive.
Similarly, a tiger - any animal actually - will defend it's home, offspring (babies) by doing the same. They will first be show agontistic behavior - like growling and snarling, but if the "stranger" does not go away then they will go aggressive by attacking, and then even killing. Tigers often put up signals of warning near their territories - urine markings (contain chemicals for other animals to identify) is one way, but they will also make noises like roaring and snarling if you come too close. If you ignore this... then you will most likely have a fatal encounter with a tiger itself.

i have two explanations as to why the tiger may have attacked...

1- it may have felt threatened by the man because even though man is not necessarily bigger than a tiger, we still are not as well known so were more mysterious.
2- the tiger had a territorial issue with the man being there as do all of the other tigers on this earth.

To keep things like this from happening i recommend just staying out of their way because if you dont bother them they shouldnt bother you. Because walking into tiger territory uninvited and making loud noise and marks is like walking into a native american territory and breaking all of their rules.. disrespectful

animals are natural born killers, but only when they are threatened or feel threatened. if the tiger were to be searching for food, then the tiger would kill and possibly eat the man. but i think that humans are not very good to eat and taste bad.

to avoid certain attacks such as those in your village, you should never travel alone or at least unarmed. only if you feel threatened you should defend yourself and not kill animals for fun.

good luck.

He was possibly attacked because tigers are very territorial and perceived the man to be trespassing and so he was attacked and not killed. The best way to avoid this would be never to travel alone at night. Always in a group. And make plenty of noise so that you do not surprise the tiger. That's how we avoid grizzly attacks near where I live.

Some animals do kill others, usually over territory, to show who is alpha male & to get a mate. I suppose thats how it would have started with humans, but as our minds evolved people realised they could manipulate things that happen, even if it is by killing. Humans want power & they found a way of getting it, just like some animals...it is strange though considering humans are probably the only species with a concsience

I am not a Tiger expert but I suspect the Tiger was just defending it's territory. Why it did not eat the guy was probably because he tasted nasty. Most predators will not eat other meat eaters. I guess it is that we taste bad. Think about it....Lions eat only animals that graze, and so do we. I cannot think of one meat eating animal that we consider tasty. Fish, not included.

Even house cats kill for pleasure and then play with their food and not eat it.
