because the old man thought it wasn't Earl Grey tea because it was cold, not hot and Earl Grey is what they serve in England.

Actually it is not an insult to Her Majesty at all . Earl Grey is the tea of the royal house. It is also a good tea, whether hot or cold. In the TV series, "Star Trek, The Next Generation", Captain Piccard only drank Earl Grey; hot. He was obviously British.

In an earlier BBC series, "Keeping Up Appearances", the main character, Hyacinth Bucket (played by Patricia Routledge) always used Earl Grey tea. It is the main dark tea of the English served with biscuits (cookies as known in the U.S.).

No insult to Her Majesty, the Queen at all. God save the Queen.

He says that Earl Grey is English tea and if the tea isn't Earl Grey it is an insult to England. He then goes on to say that if you insult England that is an insult to the Queen.
Well I hope that helps.
