Does manual shifts wear out the transmission more than full automatic mode? Is it better to leave it at automatic mode?
I have a 2000 e46 328i and I enjoy up/down shifts using my steptronic transmission while I drive. Full automatic mode either under D or S just does not suit me.
I've been driving my car for the past 7 years, and would like to protect the tranny as much as I can.

As many have pointed out, you won't wear it out. You're simply shifting it to your liking instead of using the car's D or S modes.
But you really should change out your tranny fluid every 50,000-60,000 miles even though BMW claims it's a lifetime fill fluid.
Many 1999 and 2000 E46 have suffered transmission failures because of the lack of new fluid.

Steptronic is like your basic computerized yet basically a different call. are not getting too apprehensive. you have opposite, impartial, stress and park. there's a putting however the place you are able to settle on while the motor vehicle shifts gears. there isn't any take carry of like on a handbook. that's a consumer-friendly computerized transmission. no longer something to agonize approximately. to make sparkling, the only distinction is that there is the alternative, as quickly as the motor vehicle is in stress, to push the shift knob to in the direction of the motive force after which you're in steptronic. I own an X5 with steptronic and that i infrequently use it. it is your commonplace computerized.

It may just be a good idea to buy a stick shift next time around.
There is no reason to think that using this feature will wear out the transmission, but equally if you literally use it all the time I have to wonder if it would have at least a slight negative effect.

I was always wondering about that. I was starting to think that it's best to leave it in Drive then to put it in Sport mode. If you want to use Sport mode once in a while, it shouldn't be a problem.

It shouldn't make a difference - you're just instructing the vehicle to shift at a specific time, rather than having it decide for you.
