Well messages in a bottle I guess really originated in the "pirate days" when people of this time did not have satilite phones or flares etc.. So its been a cliche in commercials and movies over the years. Really messages in a bottle were first intended for a distress call. I don't think it would be intended to return the message.
Hope that wasn't to insightfull...
