English is the national language of the United States. It is not yet the Official language of the United States but it should be.

States that have declared English their official language (print nothing in any other language that is official state communication and pronouncements):
Alabama, Arizona (just recently...was a proposition passed by the voters Nov 2006), Arkansas, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho (this year), Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, North Carolina, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, and Wyoming.

The State of Hawaii declared both English and Hawaiian only as official languages.
Louisiana recognizes only English and French legally.
New Mexico has English and Spanish as official languages.

So with 26 states declaring English only as its official language (the three official bi-lingual states not included in that number), with more likely to declare such soon...

I think it fine and high time for the US Government to declare English the official language of the United States.

Yes. This is the ONLY way that we can join as one and be united in the United States-when we all speak one common language. We will have a lot of problems like racism if people don't choose English. Sorry-that's just the way it is.

The national language is English.... however for intelligent design we require multi-lingualism and competence is alllanguaes that we can get whether that language medal is for just words and phrases, reading .written ability or at a literate written and spoken level. Diplomacy by all brings knowledge, opportunity, culture, talents, a view to the world and friendship as well as countless other opportunities beyond our present conception. Bye the way does anybody remember the story of the Tower of Babel?... do it in reverse with accomodation.

I don't see a need for English to be the official language. But judging by some of the answers here, it seems that many who feel otherwise should learn how to speak English themselves.

We would be called bigots if we had English as the official language. It should probably be Arabic or Spanish. We cannot have our own language or culture. It is not allowed

I think everyone is welcome to speak their language here in the US. However, when it comes time to visit the hospital, or send your kids to school, it's a different story. I can't count how many times people get frustrated with me at work because I don't understand their language. I don't know about anyone else, but I would never have the balls to enter a foreign country and expect people there to understand english...

Yes.
English is the national language of the US. If you don't speak it, you can't prosper. I welcome anyone who speak other languages, but everybody has to learn English, because it's the language that Americans communicate with.

It should be the official language.

No; I don't believe that any purpose would be served by forcing people to choose one language. It would also open the door for a group speaking another language to force THEIR language on others should they become the majority.
