Hydration is the addition of water to an ion. The energy released when a mole of gaseous ions has excess water added is called the hydration energy. The difference between the sum of the hydration energies of the positive and negative ions in a compound, and the lattice energy is called the energy (or enthalpy) of solution, and will basically determine whether a compound is soluble or not.
