From what I understand, at this point the "cavity" that they were mining in has been reached with a 2.5" drill. A listening device has already been inserted, but it is unfortunately not picking up any sound. The miners are trained to bang on bolts in their mining corridor if they hear a drill, and they, dead or alive, have not done so at this point.

The next step they are going with is to insert a two-way communication device, one that will be able to transmit sound as well as pick it up, and also a simple camera that points straight down and has a very limited viewing angle.

I would say that so far, the news is discouraging, but not to the point of making conclusions. Remember, the miners can't see a thing. There is zero light there so it is, in every sense of the word, pitch black. Who knows why they aren't banging on bolts, who knows how well this tiny microphone picks up sound, who knows whether the miners were not banging on bolts earlier, when they actually heard the drill, but then stopped and had no way of knowing when to the resume since they surely can't actually see any drill or microphone down there even if it was 1" from their faces.

But I think that people are confused about what communication has and has not been established. They HAVE inserted a microphone, but HAVE NOT inserted any kind of speaker to communicate anything to the miners.

Hello, I just came off the Yahoo board and I read that they had drilled through the mountain, now it will take two hours to bring the small drill back out, then they will connect the camera equipment, and it will take another two hours to get the camera down the shaft again. From what I can see the whole nation is watching and praying for these miners. I think that is wonderful.

Yahoo have headline saying the drill hole just reached where the miners are. No word on they're alive or not.

Last I heard -no new news. And it's getting to the point that if there IS any, any time soon, it probably WON'T be good. :(
