It's certainly changing it, but whether the changes will be permanent or temporary remains to be seen. I think it reflects a laziness in people who don't need to try very hard to communicate. If it keeps going like this, society as a whole will suffer for it in the end by not being able to effectively get our messages across to each other. It's a shame to see otherwise bright and clever people "dumbing" themselves down just to fit in with this latest trend.

Ruining and destroying.

It's just not proper or realistic to spell great, "gr8." I am a teacher and see papers with u for you and all that, that is just butchering the English language, terrible. There is no need for sms outside text msgs!

I understand that it's a pain to press all those keys on a regular cell phone, so you need to abbreviate. But please, no where else! Not even in ims!

sms is just another stage in the development of the English language, modeling after our high-paced, no-nonsense tech world...it will have as much affect on the future as any other generations' manipulation of word usage. instead of catchphrases like "groovy," "far out," and "like totally" we're leaving behind the jks, omgs, wtfs and b4s.

poor grammar and misspellings are the fault of the person's education, and the speed at which they're trying to communicate and not the trends in language...

Yes. I Cmpltly agree. how long b4 we all 4get how to spell?
I have noticed a lot of bad spelling recently and find it really annoying. My text messages have perfect grammar and spelling so that when I come to write a real letter or email, it will be readable by anyone. I wonder if predictive keyboards will be a thing of the future?

"Destroying it"- seems alittle premature... -But it SURE seems to be "stretching it out of shape"- alittle! I don't care for this trend- either... :(
