The modern domestic chicken (Gallus domesticus I think is the latin?) would have evolved from the wild ancestor it once was, before we brought into our farms (and our hearts, eggs are yum!).

So at some point, (how long is a piece of string?) what we call a chicken today would have have hatched from the egg of something that was an almost-chicken-as-we-know-it. Maybe this proto-ancestor-chicken had slightly longer feathers, or a slightly smaller egg, whatever

The point is, eggs have probably been around for a lot longer than our modern chicken.

I remember having a crazy discussion about exactly this with some of the other kids at uni when we were doing evolution last year. I think we decided that the egg came first because the chicken would have been evolved from something else - presumably an organism that reproduces in much the same way as (or at least a similar way to) chickens - through a series of mutations.

OK! we have to ask more questions!!!
In all seriousness it depends

lets say the T-rex gave birth to the chicken instead of long term evolution.

The egg would be considered a t-rex egg because the t-rex laid it. However calling it that would suggest a t-rex would be born.. but if a chicken hatches from the egg it was a chicken egg then...

If we had to choose the chicken came first.. before the chicken was another kind of creature so techincally its the other creatures egg. When the chicken lays it's own eggs then its a chicken egg. isnt it? :)

To dumb people: The argument is not [timeline] which came first! Eggs were around WAY before the modern chicken, the question is WHICH came first? the chicken or the CHICKEN egg?? as in was the chicken hatched as a chicken or pre-chicken thing beast.

i could assume from an evolutionary stand element, you will be able to make the case for the two. i'm optimistic there grew to become into species such as chickens having eggs before they grew to alter into the poultry all of us be attentive to at present, and that i'm additionally optimistic there have been eggs to a minimum of a few thing which may be such as chickens being hatched besides. understanding this, i could could say that the 1st poultry via definition of what all of us be attentive to at present could be born via egg because of the fact evolution could ensue in the species yet could ultimately influence the chickens in the egg first. After that, the poem has a reliable bypass haha!

the reason this question seems like a paradox is because it's not actually the right question. chickens evolved. evolution happens to populations of organisms over many generations. there never was one individual first chicken, it was a gradual process. the birds that chickens evolved from already laid eggs - had done as far back as the first reptiles that started laying hard shelled eggs.

I'm guessing the egg. Eggs were around way before chickens. The contents inside them just slowly evolved to what we now know as a chicken.

Obviously there is no TRUE answer to this question...otherwise it wouldnt have stuck with us all these years.

However, in my opinion i think it is certainly most logical that the chicken came first. In order for an egg to hatch it must be incubated...meaning a chicken or some creature or an actual human made incubator would have to exist in order to give the egg proper conditions required to hatch.

The beauty of this is that while i may not be right...i CANT be wrong. think about it

What proof do we have which came first? We know that the chicken andd the egg exist, but who came first??? It is almost like saying, ok, I am here, don't know how I got here, except from my mother and father, but where did they come from? Without accepting that God made the first egg, and the egg where man came from, then you will drive yourself nuts. Believe me, there was a master engineer, and if you do not believe it, then you, I assume, can answer all the other things that have no explanation. We are not God, however God gave us a brain to figure the unexplainable, but are we capable to do this, no, only God has those answers. We will never be God. I believe that those that cannot accept that there is something bigger than themselves, are only fooling themselves.

Obviously the egg, its simple evolution. The first true "Chicken" would have been the offspring of a chicken like creature, most likely extremely simmilar to the one we know today.

when a mutation b/t the egg and chicken happened it happened with the egg. mutations occur during meiosis
so when that egg millions of years ago and over many generations evolved from what it was, say a t-rex to a chicken thru genetic drift, mutation, selective features for survival...the egg will always (generally) survive and the mutation will be carried with the egg thru development...
