This is my 1st time renting an apartment and I'm wondering what kind of processes I need to go through? I have two other roomates and they told me that we have to sign the contract TOGETHER in order to rent a house/apt, is that true? Because I will be on a trip the date they sign the contract and I'm afraid that I have to cancel my trip (and I don't want to)...Can they sign the contract w/o me (or maybe I can sign it later)? Thanks!!

Sign the contract before OR you can ask the LL to allow you to sign it when you come back OR have him fax it to you on your trip and return it. Most landlords will want everyone to sign the lease.

You will have to sign the lease yourself but you should be able to make arrangements to sign around your trip. Don't cancel, just ask them what they want you to do because you will be out of town. Read your lease very carefully before you sign it so ask for a copy up front, take it home because it is serious business. If one of your roomates leaves, with or without your permission, you become liable for his rent and any damages/or other charges. The lease may or may not allow you to have another person move in. You need to find out. You also need to find out what happens to the deposit if one moves out. You are jointly liable and if you get screwed by a roommate, civil court is your ownly course of action to recoup losses. Be very careful who you trust when you sign leases. Too many people are screwed by their "friends" when things happen and they have to pay the price. Management is not your friend-they have a job to do-and they will not save your bacon if anything happens. A lease is a binding contract.

Talk to the landlord and see if you can sign later. Just make sure it is clear to the landlord that you are to be included on the lease. If not you will have no legal standing when/if problems arise.

You dont have to be there, you can sign whenever. You dont have to sign at all if you dont want on the leas, which will prolly be a good idea as living w/ friends always ends badly and you'll prolly end up breaking lease anyway.

Generally you can sign it later, but you can probably sign it before you go also. Talk to the landlord and tell him / her about your upcoming trip. I am sure something can be worked out.
