Yes, that is troubling. It is also troubling that some of those celebrities you mentioned look as if they're starving themselves.
The poverty issue needs a big governmental solution. Rich people aren't going to give away a big percentage of their incomes willingly to the homeless and impoverished people - it has not occurred in the past and chances are most of the rich people will hold onto their wealth. Uncle Sam needs to solve this problem by getting the poor people to get good jobs and by giving aid to the people that can't help themselves. Perhaps they can make a tax on certain luxury items that only the rich people buy, and that they cannot get elsewhere(like they did with yachts when Bush Sr. put a tax on high-end luxury items - the rich just bought yachts from foreign countries), and then use the proceeds from that tax to help the poor.

Ya celebrities.... you and i really arent any different. Sure, they may spend 1000 on an outfit, while you only spend 20$. But 20$ can feed a whole family for a week in some 3rd world countries.

Well, I think all of us in America spend money on stupid stuff when there are people are staving and dieing all over the world. The problem is any of us would pay to save a particular person or child, none of us trust these corporate things raising money for the starving. I think they all make money off of the contributions.

well it does sound awful to me! but then, we cannot expect the world to become a utopia where in all people will be enjoying the same status financially, socially and on any other basis you can think of.
this is the very reason why simple living has been promoted by all cultures all along. this ensures that the lucky few help out their fellow beings to eke out a respectable living.
Instead of waiting for others to adopt this age old nugget of wisdom i think we should adopt to it ourselves and set a model for others around us to follow.
PS: a good question. :)

Some people would find it horrible that you spend $20 on a shirt when there are people starving. We all live lives of excess.

It seems the ones with the most are the ones to give the least. I believe what goes around comes around. I do what I think is best, because I control only me.

YES!!! THANK YOU!!!!
Although it's not at all their fault, the least they could do is use their fame and fortune to support a cause other than Swarvoski crystals or Prada or w/e, yu know??? Also how they overrate everything important, and underrate all the important stuff.
There's just no excuse America. There's no excuse. *smh*
