I am looking for anything in the comedy, action or drama genre. I am trying to do a study on Modern Japanese film and want to find out what viewers think are the latest modern classics.

I really liked a movie that my friend brought over last weekend called Train Man. It was a romance about an anime nerd who gets advice from people on an internet chat board on how to woo a girl. I don't know if I would consider it a classic, but it was worth watching and is a good commentary on modern culture.

Do you mean Japense films directed by Japanese and made in Japan? Any way here is some information which might help you.

I liked the most "Sayuri" Sayuri is an american movie which based on a novel, Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden. The film is produced by Steven Spielberg and is directed by Rob Marshall. Sayuri was filmed in California and Japan. One of the places is Kiyomizudera Temple, Kyoto.
