First of all, using weights a lot will stunt your growth, especially during your age right now. I would focus more on aerobic exercises like running, biking and jumping rope - things that can also help you in basketball(for example, jumping rope really improves your jumping ability and speed).
As far as shooting, I would suggest learning from the pros. Try to use the shooting positions of Ray Allen and Allan Houston - both of them really have nice form. And another great shooting aid, especially for free throws, is Dr. Tom Amberry's method.
Here's his website:
http://www.freethrow.com/index.htm
And you can look for his video online or maybe at your local libraries. OK, good luck.

Well I'm 14 and I love basketball. I have found that a good aid to help you gain a higher shooting percentage is to try the perfect jumper system. It's great. It takes some time to getting use to. It's real easy to put on too. All you have to do is just snap it on your rim, and you are good to go. It makes the rim smaller so you have develop good form and good arc to your shot. When you use it for a while and tkae it off, you notice a huge difference in your shot. It helps develop muscle memory, so you'll shoot better. And on the weights subject, I don't really know if it does stunt your growth. I don't think it does. Because I've lifted weight for the past couple years all year long. And I've grown about 4 to 5 inches. Good luck I hope my advice will help you.

Yup, everybody is right. Practice, practice, practice and play as much as you can. My kid went to a nationally ranked bball camp, played varsity and AAU for years but when he was 13, he sat on the bench. It took a lot of work to be a starter. The camp recommended 1000 shots a day, and keeping a chart to track percentages. Their motivational speaker said that dedicating yourself to doing better will give you the edge over the ones who don't. For ex., he said don't sit in front of the tv, do pushups. Don't walk if you can walk fast. Don't walk fast if you can run. (Of course, all of this hard work could make bball stop being fun!) Some of the upper strength things you mentioned will work themselves out over the next year or two. Just look at 15 yr olds, and you can clearly see that there's going to be a big difference. Good luck -- 13 was a bad bball year for my kid too, but it worked out great and eventually he was even getting calls from college coaches!

When I played basketball in school, I was always told to keep my elbow in and bend my knees. Other than that, everyone really develops there own form or style of shooting. So I guess the best thing is to do the cleche......practice, practice, practice. I think that over doing the weights will stunt your growth only if you were to mess up your growth plate.

hey...i am about to turn 14 but i have the same problem. But the thing is that i am a really good shooter i am just not good and actually playing with people or under pressure. I play at school but i didn't make the team twice. I am just not good at dribbling and handling to much. But i am good at free around shooting. Good luck man. Weights don't stunt your growth man...don't worry.

Lifting too young will stunt your growth. You can't do much but get stronger to hit a jump shot. You should be able to hit a 2 from anywhere on the court at 13, if you're a boy.

Flick your wrist or use your thumb. Just pick up the ball and start shooting. Aim towards the back of the hoop and arc the ball high like an upside down U into the basket and they will drop like flies.

try using your legs. Make a jump shot! the added boost/power from your legs will help. And yeah, you should practice a lot too. Find the good balance between jumps/leg power and wrist action.

Just keep on practicing because practice makes perfect. And no, don't worry, you still have a lot of years to grow taller.
Hope I helped!
