A lot of people say they're lycans, but are lycans real? I mean, I know I can't take anyone's word for it online, but I guess I'd like to know your opinions on it, anyway. And some so-called lycans are on yahoo answers, why would they have any need to be on yahoo answers? Are people born lycans or is it contracted somehow? AND to close up this multi-question, is there any difference between a lycan and were wolf?

Lycan is short for lycanthorpe, Werewolf is a synonym. "wer" is Olde English for "man." Lycan and anthorpe are Wolf and man. Petronius of Rome wrote of them in the "Banquet of Trimalchio." Are they real? How would you handle a nude male running through the streets one all fours with blood on smeared around his face and mouth. Would you believe him mad or perhaps a Wer Wolf--either is possible.

Well, it seems like a silly question to me! Here I am clicking my way around mythology and folklore, and what should I find but a question in which the asker first asserts that he can't trust our answers but asks for them anyway. Does it make sense? Well, whatever. You asked, I'll answer.
First thing, I was under the impression that "lycans" were from a movie. Werewolves have been in legends for a long time, but I don't know about "lycans." Or if there is any difference.
Second thing. I already know that you don't care in the slightest what I write, due to the fact that it's on the internet and written by an anonymous person, you will be inclined to doubt it. That's the right thing to do in this case, of course, but it still makes this awkward. But still, here goes:
Yes. Like I said, I don't know about lycans but werewolves are. To what extent and how frequently, I don't know. I have reason to believe that there may be many creatures that can be called werewolves, and they may all be very different.
I must stress that I only have direct knowledge about one type, and I can only speak with certainty about this one type. The kind of werewolf I know about is a person who is sort of both a human and a wolf, and switches between their forms at will. They don't become a half-man-half-wolf, they pick one or the other at any given time. Additionally, far from being evil, they are simply humans who are not just human. There is no reason why they should not be benign (unless the person in question is a jerk by nature).
So assuming that there are several kinds of werewolf, I can't answer the question of "born or contracted" as it must surely differ. But regarding what I do know, it can be both born and picked up later, but usually one is born with it. Really, it isn't a disease and therefore can't be contracted, but very rarely someone can figure out how to become this sort of werewolf regardless. Also, even though one is usually born with it, it may lie dormant until discovered, which can take many years or even fail to happen at all.
And what they would be doing on yahoo answers? Maybe they are faking it. Or, perhaps they just need to express it, no matter if anyone will believe them or not (due to anonymity), and they really are werewolves... as is the case with me. And that's why I'm here.
Sorry that the answer is so long. I can't stop myself from rambling. Oh, and whether you believed anything I said or not, I do hope my answer contributed something, anyway.

The Lycans that people are refering to, for the most part, is a state of mind. People tend to undergo change at the result of a great stimulus, but it tends, as I said, to be psychological rather than physical. There are cases documented in ancient histories of people taking on the characteristics of animals, but this is extremely rare today.

i believe that some do exist.
however the ones on Yahoo answers, i believe are teenagers that have seen "Underworld" one too many times.
they are niether born nor is it contracted. but it is a choice that one makes through dark magic. and deals with demons.
I would refer you to the case of Peeter Stubbe. he was convicted of werewolfism and the murder of no less than 13 men women and children, and of lewd acts upon the bodies.
the Werewolves of history, often had a device called a Wolf Belt, that was made either from the skin of a Human used in a Sacrifice to a demon. or from the skin of a wolf killed on the dark moon.
Lycan is a term that came into pop culture because of the term Lycanthropy. which is the so called disease that makes werewolves. i think that Dungeons and Dragons had a little bit to do with that one.
do i sound a bit obsessed with the subject. it is due to recurring nightmares of werewolves chaseing me. and an experience where i dreamed that i was fighting one. only to wake up with scratches on my arms, blood on my sheets, and my father asking me what i was doing in the yard with a sword at 2 in the morning..i was 22 when this happened.
(the sword thing is not that odd, i collect them and have since i was 7)

Who am I to judge really? I have to take everyone at their word unless proven otherwise.
