Ben Franklin's 'Join or Die' cartoon was possibly one of the most influential political cartoons in American history. You probaly know that the cartoon uses a snake to represent the divided colonies, and was meant to encourage the colonies to unite...
However, Ben Franklin omitted one of the thirteen colonies...Do you know which it was, and why he did that?

Pennsylvania is included--it looks, however, like an R. Franklin also lumped all of the New England colonies--Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Connecticut--together as one. Georgia is not shown, nor is Delaware, which was often called "The Three Lower Counties" and considered part of Pennsylvania.

Actually, two of them (Delaware and Georgia) are omitted. Neither colony sent delegates to the Albany Congress in 1754, which was where Franklin's idea for the cartoon originated.

Pennsylvania.

Because it was printed in Pennsylavania, it was assumed that that was who the other colonies were uniting with...
