When winding the springs, you should always be pushing up on the bar, so if the winding cones are toward the outside edges, the left hand side would wind counterclockwise and the right hand side would wind clockwise.

The proper winding tension is usually measured with a straight line the full length of the spring. As you wind the spring, the line will distort around the spring forming rings. You count the number of rings to determine the amount of torsion on each spring. The number of rings is specific to each manufacturer, model and size of door, so you MUST consult the directions for your specific door to find the proper tension.

There are some variations on the assembly, so you really should have a good look at the specific directions for your door to make certain you have the correct spring on the correct side (they are not reversible) as well as the proper tension.

Also, be very careful with this project, winding a torsion spring can be very dangerous. There is a great deal of potential on the winding bars during the process. If one slips, it will fly a good distance unless you happen to be in the way, in which case you will be injured. Again, read the directions specific to your door.

You will only be able to wind one way. It you look at how the springs are "screwed" or turned onto the pulley the direction of winding is as though you are unscrewing or turning the springs off the pulley. That will not happen however because as you wind the spring it gets smaller in diameter and squeezes so tight that it will not come off.
If you wind the wrong way the spring expands or gets larger and will not grip the pulley, so you are not actually able to wind it the wrong way it will just start slipping.

The direction is so after winding and tightening the collar the tension of the spring will lift the door. To keep track of the number of turns, chalk a straight line on the spring before starting, then you can count the number of turns when it is wound. The line will become a spiral as you wind. Make sure you wind both side evenly.

Be cautious! Torsion springs are very dangerous if not handled properly.

You can follow these other guys directions, it's all good advice but, let me warn you, if your hesitant about this job, hire it out.
I did this for a friend and I know what I'm doing. I slipped on a turn and the spring came loose, to this day, I don't know how, it just did.
I was kicked off the ladder, broke two cervical vertebra's and ruptured two discs, torn my shoulder loose and had to have surgery on everything.
That spring can be like catching a 105 howitzer shell in motion. You don't want to be around when it kicks loose.

The spring costs about $60 but I wouldn't try to install it if you have never done or at least seen it done. The spring requires that you rotate it about seven or so turns causing a great deal of tension.

Wind to increase tension on the spring. Wind to lift the door. When you can have the door (or almost) sit at the halfway point you have peoper tension.

warning, danger... if you have these kinds of simple questions, you need to think about hiring it out. It can be deadly.
