Charter is fairly good in my area. On the three meg I think the upload is 384K so you should see speeds like 2.5 - 2.7 down and 300-350 up. With 5 meg I see 4.6 to 4.7 down and 450-460 up. (the 5meg service is uploaded at 512)

I like the checks at http://speakeasy.net/speedtest/
use the nearest city for best check!

The way internet speed in North America work sucks. Point blank.

You will NEVER get the advertised speeds posted by the company. This is simply b/c they use 5%-25% of your bandwidth for overhead (maintenance, system upgrades, etc.).

They advertise 3 or 5 (whatever) megabits per second. Not megabytes. It's a common misconception.

8 bits in a byte.
1024 bytes in a megabyte.

So 3 mb/s not 3 MB/s (notice the case)

Simply advertised download speed of 3mb/s. Hope to get 2.2 on a great day.

Other factors come into play with cable internet like how many people in your nieghorhood have cable internet, signal strength b/c of attenuation or poor cabling.

The higher the number the faster you will be able to download large files and surf the Internet. The real answer is unless you are downloading lots of large files or doing online gaming you really won't see much difference between 3Mb and 5Mb. Many servers you visit are not that fast and they limit your ability to go at your full speed,

your only being told your speed to the isp line from there it begins to slow down...
if you check your speeds.. you should notice on a 5mb an average of 3-4mb/s (non busy times can be from 4.5-5)
the upload speed will likely remain the same with cable

3Meg is like u download at 300kbps or so
5Meg is like u download at 500kbps or so

you should be looking for what your speed is
(like if it says 1.5Mbps then you're T1, which is normal)
if you're higher, you're in good shape
