1,000 is a matter of speech. The ipod has fixed storage, but each song can be anywhere from 2 Mbytes to 4 or more Mbytes depending on compression rate and length of the song.
If you also add album art, that is extra disc space. There may be some hidden material as well. So, nothing to worry much. If you need more songs, use a lower bit rate than the default.

would you rather buy your ipod that is saying that it can hold 899 songs or a 1000? The 1000 ipod of course. That's because it's just rounded up to make it look better and more desirable. Example, it's a 99.99 dollar TV, it's just a penny off from being $100 which is a 3-digit number. a 2-digit number looks better than 3 even if it's off by just one cent. It's small merchanting strategies like these that makes products more easy to sell

The number 1000 is just an estimate.
If your songs are long it will only allow as many as can fit on the hard drive of your ipod.
Again, you may have bought a 4GB storage one, but the ipod never has the exact amount, it is always less.

ok all you have to do, like in MP3 you can lower the bitrate of the songs. Find some software that will allow you to do that. That will reduce the size of the song but still have the good quality the recommended is 64 kbps.

it depends on how long the song is. the longer your songs are the less space you will have for other songs
