A second cousin means your parent and their parent are cousins.

A first cousin once removed would be you and their parent are first cousins. That makes them once-removed.

For example, if person A and B share a common great grandparent, they are second cousins, because two generations (the parents and grandparents) separate each of them from the great grandparent.

If person A's great grandparent is person B's grandparent, then they are first cousins once removed, "first" because there is only one generation between B and his or her grandparent and "once removed" because there is a further generation between A and that same ancestor.

So, in this system, the child of one's aunt or uncle is one's first cousin. The child of one's first cousin is one's first cousin once removed.

I have to add, what a great question! After reading this site and placing names on the chart, I found out my second cousins are really my cousins once removed, interesting. LOL

A second cousin is your grandfather or grandmother's sibling's grandchild. A first cousin once-removed is the son or daughter of your first cousin. A first cousin being the child of a sibling of one of your parents, as you probably know.

it has to do with generations

a second cousin is in your generation

lets say my mom has a cousin named Pam, and Pam has a son named bob

bob is my second cousin

pam is my cousin once removed, because she is a generation above me

i hope that makes sense
