Mistake in the War On Terrorism

Michael Sullivan wrote:

President Bush did make a bad mistake in the war on terrorism. But the mistake was not his decision to go to war in Iraq. Bush's mistake came in his belief that this country is the same one his father fought for in WWII. It is not. Back then, they had just come out of a vicious depression. The country was steeled by the hardship of that depression, but they still believed fervently in this country. They knew that the people had elected their leaders, so it was the people's duty to back those leaders. Therefore, when the war broke out the people came together, rallied behind, and stuck with their leaders, whether they had voted for them or not or whether the war was going badly or not. And war was just as distasteful and the anguish just as great then as it is today. Often there were more casualties in one day in WWII than we have had in the entire Iraq war. But that did not matter. The people stuck with the President because it was their patriotic duty. Americans put aside their differences in WWII and worked together to win that war. Everyone from every strata of society, from young to old pitched in. Small children pulled little wagons around to gather scrap metal for the war effort. Grade school students saved their pennies to buy stamps for war bonds to help the effort. Men who were too old or medically 4F lied about their age or condition trying their best to join the military. Women doubled their work to keep things going at home. Harsh rationing of everything from gasoline to soap, to butter was imposed, yet there was very little complaining. You never heard prominent people on the radio belittling the President. Interestingly enough in those days there were no fat cat actors and entertainers who ran off to visit and fawn over dictators of hostile countries and complain to them about our President. Instead, they made upbeat films and entertained our troops to help the troops' morale. And a bunch even enlisted. And imagine this: Teachers in schools actually started the day off with a pledge of allegiance and with prayers for our country and our troops! Back then, no newspaper would have dared point out certain weak spots in our cities where bombs could be set off to cause the maximum damage. No newspaper would have dared complain about what we were doing to catch spies. A newspaper would have been laughed out of existence if it had complained that German or Japanese soldiers were being "tortured" by being forced to wear women's underwear, or subjected to interrogation by a woman, or being scared by a dog or did not have air conditioning. There were a lot of things different back then. We were not subjected to a constant bombardment of pornography, perversion and promiscuity in movies or on radio. We did not have legions of crackheads, dope pushers and armed gangs roaming our streets. No, President Bush did not make a mistake in his handling of terrorism. He made the mistake of believing that we still had the courage and fortitude of our fathers. He believed that this was still the country that our fathers fought so dearly to preserve. It is not the same country. It is now a cross between Sodom and Gomorrah and the Land of Oz. We even have the wicked witch of the west as the new Speaker of the House of Representatives. We did unite for a short while after 911, but our attitude changed when we found out that defending our country would require some sacrifices. We are in great danger. The terrorist are fanatic Muslims. They believe that it is okay, even their duty, to kill anyone who will not convert to Islam. It has been estimated that about one third or over three hundred million Muslims are sympathetic to the terrorists cause...

Hitler and Tojo combined did not have nearly that many potential recruits.

We either win it - or lose it - and you ain't gonna like losing.

So YOU better think about THAT!!!!!!!!!

Why do the Liberals hate the truth? Every statement this gentleman made is absolute fact. All proven in history. Why are they in such denial?

I don't know if it makes any difference, or not, but Sarge is right. I am a woman. But, I am also an American who loves her country.

I laugh at the liberal answers thus far. This is exactly what is wrong with America today. Libs have no clue what unity is or what it means to have integrity. They don't even get it.. they make it clear with their answers. Their answer is to cower away and be appologists to those who want to kill us. They have turned into a selfish group who cares only for their social programs and any worthless cause that will hamper progress.

yo yo yo... I can't remember... did Bosnia or Rwanda attack us? If you could just find that out for me that would be great!

THere was no attack on Pakistan so don't show your complete ignorance. President Obama is doing what he promised ... he's doing what Bush should have done straight after 9/11 if he was really serious about going after Bin Ladin and eliminating Islamic fundamentalist terrorism. The Afghanistan/Pakistani border is where Bin Ladin is still holed out with the Taliban schooling a new lot of young extremist muslims with hate against the west in the madrassi schools in this area. If Bush and his incompetent cronies had concentrated on doing this job properly instead of creating even more hate from the mess they made in Iraq the whole world would be a safer place!

First let me say that many answerer's here have assumed that the asker is male. Wrong! She is only quoting a male. She is actually a very lovely woman with a strong sense of patriotism. Let me say that I think President Bush made a second mistake in the War. He didn't go in soon enough. I believe that the illusive WMDs did in fact exist and still do. They have simply been moved out of the country. The enemy had plenty of time to do it. And all traces of them could have been sterilized. And I believe they can still be used, given the right opportunity and resources. We must finish this. To back out now would, in my opinion signal the end of the American way of life as we know it. I've noticed here that even those who have chosen not to register an opinion don't care for the Liberal point of view (re: all the thumbs down) The Lib point of view seems to be that we should get out of the war and make peace with the enemy through the process of some kind of political BS. WAKE UP people. The radical Muslims do not want peace. They don't want talks, They don't even want surrender. THEY WANT US DEAD!!!!! Left wing, right wing, Dems, Reps, Libs. EVERYBODY. If you're not Muslim they want you dead. Our troops are not just fighting for Iraq's freedom, they are fighting for your very lives. Each and every one of you. Geeeeze!!! Wake up people. And just as a reminder...9-ll did really happen. And right after it happened, every man, woman and child of the age of understanding were all for going to war. What's changed?

Whether it was right or wrong to free the Iraqi people from Saddam, is now immaterial. Today we should only look at what will happen if we leave without insuring the Iraq people will be better off for our entering their country.

The insurgents have shot at both sides to inflame their anger. When both side have burning dislike for another group it is easy to fan those embers into roaring flames. In South Africa they realized that the only way for that country to heal was for the perpetrators to acknowledge their past misdeeds & for those that had been wronged to forgive them. That is what is required in Iraq. The wrongs can never be undone. They can only move foreward.

The individual Iraqi citizen must take ownership of their country & have a vested interest in creating wealth there. Their faith in their country is the only solution. The government there can no more take the streets back from the gangs than the police in the US can without the locals demanding the gangs surrender.

What a wonderful posting and question, I think it clearly shows what is wrong with America today and why the islamofascists want to kill the secular democrats in this country, unfortunately we do not all wear identifying signs so some good people are going to die in the process because of the democrats.

I noticed your question brought the normal whack jobs and hate mongers, wish there was more intellectual debate, but guess this is as good as the socialists can muster.

If you read the responses from the libs, you'd think 9/11 never happened. You'd think radical muslims weren't trying to also get licenses to drive school buses so they could kill our children.
How can this war NOT be a worthy cause?
Wake up people, we either win or we lose. At this point, a loss could be fatal to our country

When rightwingers criticize liberals we are told that we cannot question their patriotism or that our only tactic is to call them UnAmerican.

But how many wars does the left have to deliberately lose for us, how often can they undermine the troops and American security before I am allowed to question their patriotism or call them UnAmerican.
