A tough answer, but if oil does run out today, economies will collapse and we will be living back in the ancient days. Oil and coal is the major source of energy at the moment.
Another thing is, oil will last at least 300 years more (judging by current exponential consumption, taking in the emergence of China and India). And this is only based on known resources, we have yet to talk bout undiscovered oil fields.

Fuel will never run out. It can only get infinitely expensive. If it got real scarce real quick, alternative resources that were once more expensive that the market would bare would become reasonable alternatives.

Initially these alternatives would command high premiums and lure competition and alternatives into production. This would increase the supply of viable energy until such a time where it meets the demand for energy, which will likely be higher, much higher than we are used to paying now.

God bless the free market system. It may feel like it stinks, but in the long run, it is better than any alternative.

As conventional petroleum (crude oil and natural gas) that is easier to find and extract runs out, then other non-conventional hydrocarbons (hydrogen and carbon compounds) will be used for making synthetic crude oil such as from extra heavy crude oil, oil tar sands, oil shale and coal. The easiest to make first would be from extra heavy crude oil (Venezuela). Then from oil tar sands (Canada). Then lastly from oil shale and coal (USA). Since the United States is the country with the largest reserves in the world of both oil shale and coal, one day when there is little choice left in the future because conventional supplies of crude oil have ran out all over, they may have to convert oil shale and coal into synthetic crude oil.

It wouldn't be in a year. It would be in the weeks to come. Revert back to basics, if you plan to survive. A storage drum full of fuel in a remote spot for safty and emergency purposes. An extra vehicle(truck) garage kept, a secret fallout shelter, mad supplies, maps of terrains, GPS, compass, arms and ammo. Oh, I'm so ready !!!
