Hi, Im going to buy a acoustic guitar soon, and a friend of mine reccomended that I buy a cheap guitar first since im a beginner. She thinks I should buy one from Wal-Mart. She owns a Wal-Mart guitar herself. Should I buy a Wal-Mart guitar or should I buy a guitar from a music store that cost more??

-Thanks!!

Do NOT buy a Wal-Mart guitar, especially if it is a First Act guitar. They are terrible. You can get an affordable guitar that is going to last you, but a Walmart guitar is not it. Tell your price range and we can make some suggestions.

I recommend you take along an experienced guitarist to help you pick out a suitable instrument. I've had plenty of cheap guitars that were perfectly fine, but when you start at or below $100 you need to be aware that some of cheap guitars are virtuallly unplayable because of structural problems that you may not even be aware of as a newbie. I was given a guitar as a gift by a well-meaning, notn-guitar-playing friend, and it wouldn't even stay in tune no matter what and fingering was extremely difficult because of problems with the bridge and neck. And as someone pointed out, $300 isn't anywhere close to what many serious or professional players would spend on a guitar. Though quite honestly, I'm poor too, and buying a $300 guitar (which I did after I fell in love with one I found at a music store) was a major extravagence. Shop around and you should be able to find a decent, playable guitar between $100 and $200. At least pick up the instrument and see if it's even something that is comfortable for you to hold and that your fingers can easily press down on all the strings and even bar across them. Used instruments are fine--but not necessarily cheaper. Vintage guitars have been known to sell for a great deal of money.

DO NOT BUY A WAL MART GUITAR!!! Go to a local music shop and find a used acoustic guitar for cheap. Go with someone who knows a thing about guitars so you don't get ripped off into buying a completely crappy guitar...but you do NOT want some piece of crap mass produced from China and sent to a major corporation like Wal Mart. Don't just buy the cheapest one you see...get a decent one for like 100-200 bucks and you should be set...Go for a Martin or Tayler if at all possible, but those guitars are usually rather steep in price. I know at my music store we have a decent used guitar 10x better than a walmart brand for 60 bucks.

Buying a cheap guitar when you're first starting to learn will be a gigantic mistake. Cheap guitars go out of tune in minutes and anything you play will sound bad. The necks on cheap guitars aren't made properly and will continuously bend making staying in tune almost impossible. You'll hate the guitar and lose interest in learning to play. Do yourself a favor and buy or rent a good middle-of-the-road priced guitar from a reputable music store, not Walmart.

Been there.

NO NO NO!! I was also a beginner and dont get a cheap one!! if you have to find a friend who plays who is willing to sell you a good quality used guitar!! I have an Ibanez and it was sold to me at a resonable price, your first guitar is special, dont get it from Wal-Mart, look in the paper or at Dirt Cheap Guitars, at least there they are cheap but not like Wal-Mart quality. Good luck and I hope your fingers callous quickly lol, guitar is great just stick to it and you'll do fine!!

Personally I would go with a higher end guitar, as you will enjoy playing it more and will have less problems with the instrument.
Besides if you really get into playing it your going to want the better guitar, so actually your saving money.

-Better musical instruments don't depreciate in value much either, so if you decide it's not for you sell it, and get most of your money back.

Yes. Once you get better you should start to expand your budget. if you start out with an expensive guitar then when you start to get good you will be limited on what you want and will also demand even more expensive guitars...this happened to my friend... he started with a Gibson Les Paul ($2000) and now hes going after guitars that are like $10000, and i am not kidding.
