Clean the air ducts, usually done by professionals.

Use the best air filter possible for your furnace/air conditioner. Change it often.

Keep kitchen and bathrooms dry to prevent mold.

Keep smokers out of house.

Use room air filters, especially during and after cooking in kitchen.

Use a vacuum with a HEPA filter. While vacuuming, turn off air conditioner/furnace and open windows to disperse dust.

Keep garbage or anything else with bad odors out of house.

As weather permits, open doors and windows to clear out stale air.

Avoid using chemicals, dust and vacuum as often as possible. A good filter in the furnace, leave the fan running continuously. If your home is a newer one, open a window on each end of the home to allow air to blow through. If it is too hot or too cold, shut one of the windows. Older home, have the ductwork vacuumed.

There are products available that can ionize and "clean" the air in the home. Mostly they just cause the dust to cling to the floor or walls. If you need to "freshen" the air, peel a piece of citruis fruit and spray the zest in the air.

In most places, just open the windows. Nowadays, houses are built with so many types of chemicals that houses often are so polluted (indoor air) that if they were factories, they would be closed down.
