I know this one well without using a book or a website to assist me.
The aquaducts first created by Greeks and improved on greatly by the Romans, the took water from high in mountains and over a small gradual but mathematcially accurate slope descend from top to the bottom where it would be stored in Cisterns that would push the water upward out of fountains to drink and such. the large force of water being forced out the smaller lead pipes created pressure enough to force the water out of the fountain faster than it was being put into it from the cisterns.
Before that they used Wells, Rivers and lakes or creeks. The best they had were the aquaducts until modern day, it was the safest water of the time period, where by the middle ages all drank wine or ale for water was dangerous to drink now.

Probably all by gravity. I am guessing a reservoir of water was made that was at an elevation above the fountain, then there was a connecting set of pipes that channelled the water from the higher reservoir level to the lower level of the fountain. This elevation drop causes a pressure at the bottom, and therefore your water fountain spits out water.

Gravity, an intricate plumbing system, and some of the more elaborate fountains and water-related activities were powered by a large screw that was turned by laborers. The threads of the screw work to lift the water up the pipe.
Hope this helps! :-)

gravity was a definant plus there. Some were also built over the top of artisian wells that would push the water up due to underground pressure.

GRAVITY Electricity was not invented, it was discovered. Lead pipes and aqueducts carried water over valleys and through tunnels to cities for drinking and for fourntains.
